Joe Paterno Ties Eddie Robinson’s Record for Most Wins in Division I College Football

Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno further solidified his place among the elite in college football when his Nittany Lions team defeated Northwestern 34-24 on Saturday. With the win, Paterno earned his 408th win and tied the late Eddie Robinson for the most wins in Division I college football.

Robinson coached for 55 seasons at Grambling State, earning a 408-165-15 record. Paterno matched Robinson's win mark in nine fewer seasons. In his 44 years as head coach at Penn State, Paterno has a record of 408-136-3.

The 84-year-old coach still has a while before he can catch the all-time winningest coach, John Gagliardi, who currently coaches Div. III St. John's in Minnesota and has 481 wins.

Paterno will try to pass Robinson next Saturday when Penn State hosts Illinois.
