The league announced it was handing Rex a $75,000 fine on Monday, according to ESPN.
As Rex walked off the field at halftime, a fan yelled, “Rex, [Patriots head coach Bill] Belichick owns you,” to which the blustery head coach responded, “Shut the f— up!”
In February of 2010, Rex was in Miami for the Super Bowl and gave a fan the middle finger at a mixed martial arts event. He was hit with a $50,000 fine for the obscene gesture, and his history likely played a role in the hefty fine for his latest profanity.
Rex was almost immediately apologetic, showing remorse the next day when asked about the incident, which had become viral at that point.
“I was emotional, it was an emotional time,” Ryan said. “I obviously made a mistake. I was full of emotion and just popped off. Obviously, I know I represent the National Football League, I know I represent the Jets, and I know it was a mistake. I apologize for it.”
The Jets, coming off two straight losses, play host to the Bills, losers of three straight, this coming Sunday.
