Report: Yankees Acquire Michael Pineda From Mariners in Exchange for Jesus Montero

The Yankees have been laying low for most of this offseason, but they made a move to improve their rotation on Friday.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Yankees acquired right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for highly touted catching prospect Jesus Montero. 

The acquisition of Pineda gives the Bombers a good, young arm. The 22-year-old was an All-Star in his rookie season of 2011. He went 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA in 171 innings of work for Seattle. He also struck out 173 batters to just 55 walks while posting a WHIP of 1.099.

Montero, on the other hand, was considered by many to be one of, if not the top prospect in the Yankees organization. The 22-year-old catcher made his major league debut in 2011, appearing in 18 games for New York. He hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs in just 61 at-bats. He spent the majority of the last two seasons in Triple-A where he hit 39 home runs to go along with 142 RBIs in 233 games. 

Heyman also reported that the Yankees had tried to acquire Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, but the M's would not deal the Cy Young winner.
