Gang Green is a mess, and not just because the Jets (8-8) will miss the playoffs a year after advancing to the AFC championship game. Quarterback Mark Sanchez posted a 78.2 passer rating and completed only 56.7 percent of his passes for an offense that was 25th in the NFL in total yards.
The defense was better statistically, holding opponents to the fifth-fewest yards in the league, but in the statistical category that mattered — points against — the Jets ranked 20th in the NFL.
Even good teams have bad seasons, though, and the criticism coming Ryan's way has nothing to do with statistics. If Rex must go, it is because despite his bluster, he has lost control of his team. When there was a pivotal decision to be made Sunday about whether to bench a star player, he claimed to be clueless. And that just doesn't look good for anybody.
Should the Jets fire head coach Rex Ryan?
