After seeming to regain their early-season form with a 4-1 win over Washington last Sunday, the B's went into Buffalo looking to build some momentum against their divisional rivals on Wednesday.
Tuukka Rask lasted through a little over one period of hockey in Buffalo, giving up three goals on 10 shots in just 22 minutes of ice time, before Tim Thomas replaced the struggling goaltender to similar results. The offense was no better on the night as Patrice Bergeron and company were blanked by Sabres goalie Ryan Miller to the tune of a 6-0 blowout.
Saturday afternoon's matinee produced far better results, as Milan Lucic forced visiting Nashville into overtime with a power-play goal that tied the game 3-3 with just over a minute to play. The game extended into a shootout where Bergeron and Tyler Seguin netted goals for the Bruins while Thomas stonewalled two Predators' shots en route to a 4-3 win.
In between the two games, both Bruins goalies inadvertently stirred up some controversy. Thomas started things off with a heavily scrutinized Facebook post that started a media storm throughout the Bruins locker room. Then, just as the Thomas controversy began to cool, some comments made by Rask to a hometown Finnish website were taken out of context and drove questions of the backup netminder's commitment to the Bruins.
The talk of both incidents has since died down, just in time too. The Bruins certainly don't need any more distractions as they prepare for a visit from Henrik Lundqvist and the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers on Tuesday in a rematch of the Jan. 21 overtime thriller, a Bruins 3-2 overtime loss in Boston.
