Tek has been a part of many memorable Sox moments, from brawls to no-hitters to World Series wins.
But which one is your favorite?
Was it Tek jumping into Keith Foulke’s arms when the Sox won it all in 2004? Or how about The Captain being hoisted up by Jonathan Papelbon in 2007 when they bagged their second title in four years?
It was also in ’04 that Varitek smacked Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez across the head, igniting a bench-clearing brawl. Needless to say, that famous photo is plastered on the wall of just about every sports bar in New England — and rightfully so.
The backstop caught an MLB record four no-hitters during his 15-year career, from Hideo Nomo in 2001 to Jon Lester in 2008, with Derek Lowe and Clay Buchholz sprinkled in between. Fifteen catchers in MLB history have caught three no-no’s, including Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Charles Johnson and former Sox backstop Lou Criger, who caught two of Cy Young‘s no-hitters.
