Brewers Closer John Axford Leaves Note Saying Wife Went Into Labor as He Blew Save Against Cubs (Photo)

Milwaukee pitcher John Axford had somewhere to be after Friday night's game against the Chicago Cubs, so the closer did the polite thing and left a note at his locker for any inquiring reporters.

Axford had just blown a save in the ninth inning, giving up three runs. The miscue was momentous — it broke Axford's streak of 49 saves in a row.

Axford may have been smart to get himself yanked, though. The game would eventually go 13 innings and five hours, and Axford had something a bit more pressing to tend to.

With his wife in labor, Axford left the ballpark to be at her side, but he left a note so anyone covering the team would know what was up.

"I put my wife into contractions with my performance tonight!" he wrote on Brewers stationary.

He made a couple of comments about his save streak then added a tongue-in-cheek "cliche … cliche …  another cliche" at the end before jotting "Gotta Go!"

The Brewers pulled out the 8-7 win without him.
