The Sally League, a minor league at the Single-A level, held the first round of its annual home run derby in a unique location on Monday. The league's top sluggers boarded the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C., to participate in the home run hitting contest.
The hitters were scored on how far they hit the ball into the water where the Coast Guard measured off each "home run."
Harold Riggins (Rockies), Matt Skole (Nationals), Matt Duffy (Astros) and Travis Taijeron (Mets) all advanced to the second round following their performances on Monday. The derby will be concluded at Riley Park in Charleston on Tuesday night prior to the All-Star Game.
Actor Bill Murray, who is a co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs, was also in attendance and took some cuts of his own as well.
