After the Red Sox toppled the Yankees 9-5 in the night cap of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Red Sox reliever spoke to NESN.com and fired back at New York first baseman Mark Teixeira, who criticized him Friday night.
But Padilla came under scrutiny for saying that Teixeira would be better off playing “a women’s sport.” Before Sunday’s series-finale against the Yankees, he clarified the comment — somewhat.
“I think [he should play a women’s sport] because he’s always crying,” Padilla said in Spanish. “If he’s batting, he’s crying. If he’s not batting, he’s crying. Shoot, I don’t think women cry that much.
“If you get a hit, just take your base with the triple. I don’t know if he’s just trying to keep the controversy going.”
For his part, Teixeira denied Padilla’s assertions. When asked about his plans if he faced the first baseman in Sunday’s game, the Red Sox reliever said there would be no bean ball.
“Nothing,” he said of what to expect on Sunday. “I’m just going to go out there and do my job.”
