Gary Carter Credited With ‘F-Bomb’ Creation as Merriam-Webster Officially Adds Term to Dictionary

Gary Carter‘s skills apparently extended beyond the baseball diamond.

The 11-time All-Star, who was best known for his youthful demeanor and helping the Mets to their 1986 World Series title, also made a point not to curse throughout his career, a tendency that set him apart from his foul-mouthed sports colleagues.

That peculiarity seems to have added a new wrinkle to the legend of Carter, who died in February.

Carter is the first known person to use the term “F-bomb,” Merriam-Webster associate editor Kory Stamper says, according to The Associated Press. Carter first dropped the euphemism in a Newsday story in 1988.

The term, which was popularized in the 1990s, has now been added to the official print version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
