The commissioner's office announced that three Tampa Bay Rays minor leaguers were suspended on Thursday for violating the league's drug policy. Second baseman Ryan Brett and pitchers Charles Cononie and Justin Woodall all tested positive for methamphetamine and an amphetamine, according to the league.
The three were all members of the Rays' Single-A affiliate in Bowling Green, and will sit out the next 50 games without pay, effective immediately.
Brett, the team's third-round pick in 2010, is listed on the Rays website as the team's 14th-best prospect and was projected as an "exciting top-of-the-order offensive-minded second baseman in the future." That looks to be on hold for right now.
