Two Virginia Tech Football Players Arrested for Exploding Soda Bottle in Prank Gone Wrong

It turns out the Oregon offense isn’t the most explosive thing in college football.

Two Virginia Tech football players were arrested after detonating a small explosive device on Sunday night, according to The Roanoke Times. Walk-ons Joshua Trimble and Brian Rody were charged with manufacturing and detonating an explosive device, in what is being described as a prank gone awry.

“It’s just a little soda bottle, and you put aluminum foil in it along with a little toilet bowl cleaner,” Jimmy Turk, the players’ lawyer, said. “It makes a boom and blows up.”

Nobody was hurt in the incident, and Turk claims the two were attempting to play a prank on a female friend. After the bottle exploded, someone in the apartment complex called the police.

The two players will be suspended from the team until the charges are resolved. If they are found guilty, they will be dismissed from the team, whereas athletic director Jim Weaver can reinstate the players if there is no felony conviction.

Virginia Tech is scheduled to play Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28.
