Golfer Daniela Holmqvist Gets Bit by Black Widow Spider on Course, Removes Venom With Tee, Continues Round

Swedish golfer Daniela Holmqvist didn’t get a birdie, par, bogie, eagle, albatross or double on the fourth hole at a pre-qualifier for the LPGA Tour’s ISPS Handa Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia.

She got a spider.

More specifically, she got bit by a spider — a highly poisonous black widow spider, according to Golf Digest.

“When I told the local caddies in my group what had happened, they got very upset and said it was a black widow and immediately started looking for their phones to call the medics,” Holmqvist told Svensk Golf, according to Golf Digest.

As expected, Holmqvist’s leg started to swell and as the pain grew, she pulled a tee out of her pocket and cut open the wound so she could squeeze out the venom and keep it from spreading inside her body.

“It was the only thing I had handy,” she said of her tee-scalpel. “A clear fluid came out. It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible.”

Medics followed her the remaining 14 holes to make sure she didn’t pass out. Despite surviving the spider bite, she wasn’t able to survive the cut as she shot a 74, which left her out of the tournament.
