Celtics Sign Shavlik Randolph Through End of Season, Possibly Beyond

The Celtics kept their locker room intact through the end of the season when they announced Thursday that they had agreed to a deal with big man Shavlik Randolph.

Randolph, who initially joined the team on a 10-day contract, was signed to a multi-year agreement, although exact terms were not disclosed. Randolph becomes the third 10-day signee to pick up a permanent contract with the Celtics, joining Terrence Williams and D.J. White on Boston’s bench at least through the end of this season.

Despite being described as a “multi-year” deal, Randolph’s agreement with the team probably includes some sort of opt-in clause that the team may or may not exercise this summer. Still, this provides some roster and payroll flexibility given the Celtics’ salary crunch, as we wrote on Wednesday when the team announced White’s signing. The announcement was unsurprising, since Celtics coach Doc Rivers said earlier in the week that he would like to keep Randolph through the end of the year.

Randolph has appeared in three games with the Celtics, averaging 3.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 12 minutes per game. A Duke alum, Randolph has played for four teams in his six-year career.
