Morales will likely be activated off the disabled list on Tuesday, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. At that point, Morales, who has been used as both a starter and reliever in the past, is expected to join Boston’s bullpen.
Morales has been on the DL all season. The left-hander was diagnosed with a low back strain during spring training, and then developed an issue in his pectoral muscle during his 30-day rehab stint. Morales now arrives in Boston after posting a 3.18 ERA in 17 inning split between Single-A Greenville, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.
Morales was one of the Red Sox’ few bright spots last season. He compiled a 3.77 ERA in 37 games (nine starts) for Boston in 2012.
When Morales is activated, it could mean that either Alfredo Aceves or Alex Wilson is headed to Triple-A. The corresponding move remains up in the air at the moment, though.
