2013 MLB Midseason Awards Recognize Miguel Cabrera’s Greatness, Jose Iglesias’ Emergence (Photos)

Players will often tell you that individual accolades don’t matter, which obviously means that half-season awards are child’s play. But hey, who cares?

We’ve arrived at the MLB All-Star break, which is as good a time as any to review how teams have gotten to where they are and which teams will remain in the thick of things come October. It’s also a good time to look back at some individual performances and see which players would earn awards if the season ended today.

Determining the first-half award winners this season meant answering some burning questions. Which pitching stats should carry the most weight? Does Yasiel Puig‘s small sample size eliminate him from first-half Rookie of the Year contention? Is there anyone capable of dethroning Miguel Cabrera as the AL MVP?

A lot can change between now and the postseason, so perhaps we’ll look back at these midseason awards and laugh. After all, some preseason predictions already seem laughable. That’s part of the fun, though, so here goes nothing.
