KU football has struggled in recent years, and in Charlie Weis’ first season as head coach in 2012, he did nothing to turn things around, limping along to a 1-11 record. At Big 12 Media Day on Monday, Weis divulged that his recruiting pitch doesn’t contain a lot of optimism about the upcoming season, but it is full of brutal honesty.
“Everyone wants to play,” Weis said. “There’s no one that wants to not play. I said, ‘Have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that?’ So if you don’t think you can play here, where do you think you can play? It’s a pretty simple approach. And that’s not a sales pitch. That’s practical. You’ve seen it, right? Unfortunately, so have I.”
The former Notre Dame head coach did manage to convince a significant number of junior college transfers that they are better than the “pile of crap out there” as he locked down 18 on National Signing Day.
