The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry runs deep, so deep in fact that one 12-year-old Buckeye fan even named his cancer after Big Blue.
Grant Reed, 12, of Bellville, Ohio, was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago and took to calling the cancerous tumor “Michigan,” according to NBC4 in Columbus. Last week, after two years and countless chemotherapy treatments, Reed beat the figurative “Michigan” just as his Buckeyes have done to the football team in eight of the last 10 years.
Grant’s father Troy Reed was ecstatic about the news of his son going into remission, but he remained realistic about his son’s future, too.
“We’ve beat Michigan for the short term,” Troy told NBC4 in Columbus. “But like any rival, there’s a chance it can come back.”
Before leaving Columbus’ Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Grant and his brother Collin made a donation to other patients at the hospital, giving them two wagons to help them carry things around, both which read “Beat Michigan” on the side.
Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met Grant during a visit to the hospital in December. Check out the photo of Grant hanging with Meyer below.
