The Red Sox have been linked to White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy recently, and it’s sounding as if the Orioles are also in on the veteran starter. According to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, the O’s are in the mix for Peavy and other top pitchers on the trade market.
The Orioles are right in the thick of things, but money has been the big question, as Baltimore has an excellent nucleus of young talent. Heyman reports that the O’s are at least considering a major move, though.
One thing worth noting is that, according to Heyman, the Orioles have been reluctant to part ways with their top prospects, pitcher Kevin Gausman and infielder Jonathan Schoop. That doesn’t mean they won’t make a huge splash before Wednesday’s trade deadline, but it might make things more difficult, although the Orioles did show some willingness to wheel and deal by trading prospect Nick Delmonico to the Brewers in exchange for Francisco Rodriguez, who could end up being nothing more than a two-month rental.
We might not know until right before Wednesday’s deadline whether or not Peavy will call a new place home. It’s clear, however, that the Red Sox have some competition if they’re looking to pry Peavy away from Chicago.
