San Francisco Giants Planting Organic Vegetable Garden in AT&T Park Behind Centerfield Wall (Photos)

The San Francisco Giants have found a new way to cut down on food costs in the ballpark: just grow it themselves.

AT&T Park will soon be home to an edible organic vegetable garden, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Giants Garden, as it will be known, will be a 3,000 square-foot space behind the center-field wall as a partnership between the team and Bon Appetite Management Co.

The garden will include fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers, and the organization hopes to eventually be able to use the garden to supply food for the park’s catering operations. The space would also serve as an open-air restaurant and community classroom.

“We really wanted to be able to do something that is not just very San Francisco, but a part of today’s world,” said Larry Baer, Giants president and CEO. “The commitment we’re making is to create this garden and use that real estate in a way that’s productive. We think it’s the perfect solution.”

The team plans to complete construction in the offseason so the garden would be ready by Opening Day 2014.
