Belichick’s daughter Amanda, who graduated from Wesleyan University in 2007, was named the head coach of the women’s lacrosse team at her alma mater last week. The honor comes after she spent five years as an assistant coach for three different schools, including Choate preparatory school (Conn.), UMass and Ohio State.
“I’m so proud of her,” Bill Belichick said Tuesday, according to Field Yates of ESPN. “She blazed her own trail in women’s lacrosse — Choate, UMass, three years at Ohio State — and I’m excited to have her back close to home and [to have] a head coaching opportunity I know she’s really looking forward to.”
Belichick noted that he thought Amanda was ready for the new challenge and couldn’t seem to express enough just how proud he was of her accomplishment.
“I know she really enjoyed the head coaching experience at Choate for two years, and then she just learned so much at UMass and Ohio State,” Bill said. “I think she’s ready for it, she thinks she’s ready for it. I know it’ll be a big challenge, but I’m sure she’ll face it and I’m very proud that she’s doing it.”
Belichick also revealed that he and Amanda frequently discuss the rigors of coaching. While noting the clear differences between football and lacrosse, Belichick said he often shares tips and thoughts with his daughter about how to approach her team and keep her players focused.
“We definitely talk about each other’s teams and try to — from time-to-time things come up that we talk about,” he said. “They’re quite different sports and genders, but coaching is coaching, and communicating and working with players and motivating your team — there’s a lot of common ground there. We do it, we do it quite a bit.”
Amanda isn’t the only one of Belichick’s kids with coaching ties, though. Steve Belichick was hired by the Patriots as an assistant last season and is entering his second year with the team. Meanwhile, Bill’s youngest son Brian is working with the team during training camp this season.
