The sabermetric movement in baseball is one that is important for many reasons, as it gives teams and fans alike a new way to look at the game. Some baseball people, however, still prefer to see the game a different way.

We’re talking, of course, about scouting. Scouts are the lifeblood of organizations. They are the people who are tasked with identifying talent and, just as importantly, they’re responsible for writing detailed scouting reports on other teams in the leagues for upcoming games.

These scouting reports are invaluable pieces of information when it comes to making decisions, whether it’s drafting, negotiating with draft picks or building a game plan for an upcoming series.

The Baseball Hall of Fame opened an exhibit earlier this season devoted to scouting and its history. The Diamond Mines exhibit isn’t exclusive to the museum in Cooperstown, though. The Hall also opened a Diamond Mines website with archives of thousands of scouting reports over the years. Names big and small are there, just begging for productivity to be zapped.

It’s really quite enjoyable to look through and see what scouts were saying about players that eventually became well-known for one reason or another. Of course, there are plenty of Red Sox in the database, whether it’s amateur scouting reports or advanced scouting reports. Here are some of the best.
