The start of the NFL’s regular season is now less than two weeks away and football fans everywhere are gearing up for what they hope will be an exciting season. But, come February, only one fanbase will be toasting to Super Bowl glory, leaving the rest of the league’s fans depressed and, apparently, fat.
A study recently published in the Psychological Science journal took a look into the eating habits of NFL fans the day after games, and they found a hefty portion of NFL fans eat away their sadness. The report found that fans of winning teams would eat a lot healthier than those on the losing side, who inhale a lot more saturated fats and sugars to cope with the loss.
On average, fans ate almost 16 percent more food than they usually ate on Mondays, according to the report. The results also show that fans of the winning team ate about nine percent less saturated fat than normal.
The reasoning for the binge eating, at least according to the study, is that winning fans tend to feel a boost in self-control while the losers are more likely to eat because they feel an “identity threat.”
So, grab the hammer and nail, NFL fans, you’ll probably have to add a few extra belt loops over the next few months.
These guys look like they’re up to no good. Their record can back that up.
Where did it go? Where did it go?
