Red Sox Place Matt Thornton on 15-Day Disabled List, Recall Reliever Pedro Beato

Matt Thornton left his last appearance with an injury. That injury will now sideline him for a bit.

Thornton, who exited Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks after feeling a cramp in his side, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain. Pedro Beato has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Thornton’s spot on the Red Sox’ active roster.

Thornton’s DL stint is retroactive to Monday, and it means that the Red Sox will be without a left-hander who was starting to come into his own after a couple of shaky outings to begin his Boston tenure. Thornton owns a 2.16 ERA (two earned runs in 8 1/3 innings) in 10 games since coming over from the White Sox via trade.

Beato will rejoin the Red Sox for his fourth major league stint of the season. He is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA (three earned runs in 8 2/3 innings) in nine games for Boston.
