Who knew that German soccer’s lower leagues were fertile grounds for spectacular, scripted goals?
Last week saw Red Bull Leipzig drew up a play, which resulted in a goal just 10 seconds after kickoff. Maybe they were trying to top the goal fourth division club Rot-Weiss Essen scored just over a year ago.
On Sept. 1, 2012, Essen was playing Fortuna Dusseldorf II when it won a free kick 20 yards away from the opponents’ goal. Six Essen players stood around the ball and they apparently couldn’t decide who would take the free kick. Three ran toward it, feinted kicks and backed away.
The move utterly confused Dusseldorf’s defense and goalkeeper and allowed midfielder striker Kevin Grund to curl the actual free kick into the top corner of the goal.
Essen won the game 2-1 thanks to this German-engineered gem of a goal.
See Essen turn their free-kick “confusion” into a goal in the video below.
