Victorino has been banged up all season, yet the veteran outfielder continues to grind. Victorino’s latest ailment is a jammed right thumb, which forced him to leave the Red Sox’ 12-inning loss to the Orioles on Thursday.
The O’s grabbed a 5-3 lead in the top of the 12th when Chris Davis smacked a two-run, two-out single into center field. Victorino, who wore a guard on his thumb Thursday, was pinch hit for by Jackie Bradley Jr. in the bottom of the inning.
“He’s got a little bit of a jammed thumb,” manager John Farrell said of Victorino following the loss. “He’s wearing a guard to protect it, to give him some cushion. But we felt like after that final at-bat we needed to make a move there just because of the soreness he’s experiencing.”
Victorino had three hits before exiting Thursday’s game, including a single off Tommy Hunter to begin the bottom of the 10th inning.
