David Ortiz Takes Line Drive to Groin While Pitching to Child Before Game 4 Against Rays (GIF)

The Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night to advance to the American League Championship Series, but that came after a pretty inauspicious start to the evening for designated hitter David Ortiz.

The Boston slugger took some time out of his pregame preparations to pitch some batting practice to a youngster hanging out on the field behind the batting cage. Ortiz underhanded a toss to the small child, and that’s when things got a little dicey for Ortiz.

Wearing an Ortiz jersey of his own, the kid laced an Ortiz-like line drive right back where it came from. The ball screamed at Ortiz and appeared to hit him square in the groin. The hit sent Ortiz to the ground, a brief moment of fear that all men could certainly relate to.

Ortiz was fine, of course, as he collected his fifth hit of the series en route to the 3-1 Boston win that sent them to the ALCS.
