Ricky Williams Says Marijuana Use Was ‘Like Spinach for Popeye,’ Wasn’t ‘Achilles Heel’ for Him When Playing Football

Ricky Williams says smoking pot helped him play football better, and he may have found the perfect metaphor to explain what he liked about his preferred banned substance.

While some have said that Williams’ marijuana use kept him from a more productive football career, Williams is arguing that it was the opposite, and that the pot, in fact, was a real performance-enhancer for him rather than just an enjoyable pastime.

“I don’t agree that it was an Achilles heel,” he said, according to USA Today. “I kind of think it was more like spinach for Popeye.”

Come to think of it, Popeye did have both the bulging muscles and the smoking pipe to go along. Williams may be onto something.
