Dustin Pedroia Expects to Undergo Thumb Surgery in ‘Couple of Weeks’ to Repair Torn Ligament

Dustin Pedroia toughed it out. Now, it’s time to go under the knife.

Pedroia, who played all season despite a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, said during an interview on WEEI’s Salk & Holley on Friday that he expects to undergo surgery in a couple of weeks.

Pedroia suffered the thumb injury on Opening Day, but still played in 160 regular-season games and all 16 of Boston’s playoff games. He was selected to the All-Star Game in July, and earned a Gold Glove this week for his solid defensive work throughout the year.

Pedroia admitted recently that he was forced to shorten his swing a bit because of the injury. The 30-year-old still hit .301 for the season, but managed just nine home runs — his lowest total since his 2007 rookie campaign.

An MRI still needs to be performed before Pedroia undergoes surgery.
