Report: Red Sox Exploring Idea of Adding Right-Handed Setup-Type Reliever

Ben Cherington said at the beginning of the offseason that he’d look to add to the Red Sox’ bullpen in some capacity. It sounds like he’s continuing that quest.

According to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox are exploring the possibility of adding a right-handed setup-type reliever.

Obviously, that’s vague and not a huge development from Cherington’s mere insistence that he’d search for bullpen help, but hey, it’s the offseason. Who doesn’t like a good rumor — however small it is?

It’ll be interesting to see if this little nugget develops into anything further, particularly because a previous report indicated that the Red Sox aren’t looking to break the bank on high-priced relievers. Someone who pitches in a setup role, while not exactly a crippling financial endeavor, could fetch a decent chunk of change on the open market, depending on his track record.
