Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that Cano’s negotiating team has lowered the free agent’s original contract request (or, as many are calling it, “demand”) “very slightly.” Feinsand says the sides are still “far apart,” though, and while calls were exchanged Wednesday, the two sides did not meet. They intend to chat again after the Thanksgiving weekend.
The Yankees are said to have offered Cano $160 million over seven years.
Cano has been a key piece of the Yankees’ offense in recent seasons, and with New York struggling with the loss of many aging veterans to injury last season, the team can’t afford to give up its main bat, especially with Cano in his prime. The Yankees, however, have expressed interest in staying below the luxury tax threshold and have said they are not giving huge deals to free agents that are not in the best interest of the club.
