Bill Belichick: ‘Awesome’ Working With Son Stephen As Coaching Assistant

Coaching continues to run in the Belichick family.

Before New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick got his first job as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975, his father, Steve, was in the football business. Steve Belichick took over as coach of Hiram College in 1946, six years before Bill was born. Steve then went on to coach at Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Navy before his coaching career ended in 1989.

The coaching gene hasn’t stopped with Bill. The future Hall of Fame coach’s son, Stephen, is a coaching assistant with the Patriots. He officially joined the staff in 2012. Bill’s other son, Brian, helps chart the offense during games.

Bill Belichick said he’s enjoyed having his son around after he was away at college for so many years.

“It was awesome,” Belichick said Monday. “Yeah, that was awesome. Stephen was gone for six years, five at Rutgers and one at prep school, so to be able to see him on a daily basis and work with him was great. It’s great.”

Stephen played four seasons of lacrosse at Rutgers before walking on the football team as a long snapper in his senior year. He played with current Patriots Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Steve Beauharnais and Mark Harrison while with the Scarlet Knights.
