Instead, Thomas’ mother and grandmother will cheer for the Denver Broncos wide receiver from a minimum-security women’s prison in Tallahassee, Fla., USA Today Sports’ Lindsay H. Jones reports. The two were convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute crack cocaine and have been incarcerated since 2000.
Despite the fact that his mother and grandmother have never seen Thomas play football in person, they continue to be his biggest fans from afar, watching him play every chance they get.
“That drives me more, to know that they’re in there and they’re watching me,” Thomas said Monday. “I try to go out and play my best, because I know they’re going to talk about it to all the people in the jailhouse.”
Thomas was just 12 years old when his mother and grandmother were convicted.
