Richard Sherman’s Taunting of 49ers Draws $7,875 Fine From Unamused NFL

Richard Sherman was the talk of the NFL this week after his controversial postgame rant following the NFC Championship Game, but that wasn’t what brought on a fine.

The league fined Sherman $7,875 on Friday for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Sherman gave the choking gesture toward the 49ers’ offense immediately after breaking up what would have been a game-winning touchdown pass. He admitted after the game that the gesture was intended for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who threw the pick.

This marks the second time Sherman was fined this season. He was docked the same amount earlier in the season for his hit on New Orleans Saints wide receiver Kenny Stills.

Sherman has been a popular conversation topic heading into Super Bowl week, as his postgame rant, which left FOX Sports’ Erin Andrews nearly speechless, became a national story. Sherman has since expressed regret for his impassioned comments about 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree and has been unhappy and outspoken about the media’s portrayal of him as a “thug.”
