Report: Scott Cousins, Boston Red Sox Agree to Minor League Deal

Outfielder Scott Cousins has agreed to a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington certainly wasn’t joking earlier this week when he said the club likely would add a few players before spring training. The Red Sox, in addition to reportedly adding Cousins, signed outfielder Grady Sizemore on Wednesday.

Cousins mostly is known for being the guy who barreled over San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey in 2011, leading to a broken leg that ended the backstop’s season. Cousins was a member of the Marlins at the time. He spent last season in the Los Angeles Angels organization.

Cousins, who turned 29 on Wednesday, went 0-for-4 in seven games with the Halos in 2013. The left-handed-hitting outfielder spent much of the season at Triple-A Salt Lake, where he hit .233 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 52 games.

Cousins is a career .179 hitter (32-for-179) with two homers and nine RBIs in 135 games over parts of four seasons at the major league level.
