Grady Sizemore, Boston Red Sox Strike One-Year Major League Contract

The Boston Red Sox agreed to terms with outfielder Grady Sizemore on a one-year major league deal worth $750,000, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported Wednesday, and the team later announced a contract had been signed.

According to Bradford and multiple reports, Sizemore could earn up to $6 million with incentives.

Sizemore, 31, has not played in the majors since 2011 and has not played a full season since 2008 after dealing with a plethora of injuries. He has undergone seven surgeries since 2009, but when healthy, the three-time All-Star was one of the best outfielders in the game.

From 2005 to 2008, Sizemore hit .281/.372/.496 with 107 home runs and 115 stolen bases. Sizemore has played in just 210 games since 2009, hitting  .234/.314/.413.

The Red Sox designated right-hander Brayan Villarreal for assignment to make roster room for Sizemore.

The Cincinnati Reds were considered the likely landing spot for Sizemore, but injury concerns led those talks to fall apart. Sizemore brings invaluable depth to the Red Sox’ outfield, especially after Jacoby Ellsbury signed with the New York Yankees this offseason.
