Super Bowl XLVIII isn’t going to begin with some pop singer’s rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
Instead, opera singer Renee Fleming is scheduled to sing the national anthem at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 2, according to USA Today.
Since 2008, the anthem singers have not only been women but also have fallen under the pop music genre. After Billy Joel sang the anthem at Super Bowl XLI in 2007, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys got things started in each of the last six Super Bowls.
Aguilera’s rendition might be the most memorable of the bunch, as she somehow forgot the words. If you’re interested in fun facts, Super Bowl I’s anthem was performed by the University of Arizona and University of Michigan marching bands.
