The Stratton, Vt., resident failed to progress to the medal round of the women’s snowboardcross competition after falling as she led the semifinal race. Jacobellis finished in seventh place in the overall standings.
“If anything, it’s just a race,” Jacobellis said, via USA Today. “It was really hard to deal with that in 2006 when I’m really young, and then in Vancouver it wasn’t as bad because I was getting a little older and it just didn’t work out. Like this again, it just so happens that it just wasn’t coming together for me again and it’s just a very big bummer.”
In 2006 at the Winter Games in Torino, Jacobellis had an overwhelming lead heading into the final two jumps of the course. She showboated off the first jump with a trick, fell and settled for a silver medal.
In the 2010 Vancouver Games, Jacobellis didn’t reach the final. She hit a gate in the semifinal, earning her disqualification.
Jacobellis was a favorite to win gold in Sochi. She is an eight-time Winter X Games gold medalist in snowboardcross, and a three-time FIS World Championships gold medalist.
