Report: Devils Could Ask Martin Brodeur To Waive His No-Trade Clause

Martin Brodeur is the best player in New Jersey Devils history and considered one of the top three goaltenders to play in the NHL, but there’s no guarantee he’ll end his career with the team.

Brodeur might be asked to waive his no-trade clause before the NHL’s March 5 trade deadline, Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.

“I don’t know,” Brodeur recently told Chere. “I haven’t thought about it until I talk to people, and there is nothing planned yet. I’m probably going to wait. I have no indication one way or the other that anything is going to happen. I haven’t discussed it with anybody really about what my plans are going to be for the next 23 games.”

The Devils are in an interesting position as the Olympic break concludes. They acquired Cory Schneider to be their goaltender of the future at last year’s NHL draft, but it’s not easy for him to own the starting job if Brodeur is still on the roster.

Brodeur recently told Tom Gulitti of The Record that he’d like to remain with the Devils.

Brodeur is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and carries a $4.5 million salary cap hit for the 2013-14 season, per CapGeek. If Brodeur is going to retire after this year, or the Devils just want to move on, they might look to trade him and get an asset or two in return for their rebuild.
