USA Women’s Hockey Downs Switzerland In 9-0 Rout In Sochi

The U.S. women’s hockey team had a solid tune-up game before it takes on Canada in the Olympic tournament in Sochi.

Team USA beat Switzerland 9-0 in a rout spurred by a five-goal first period Monday morning, clinching a spot in the semifinals after just two of three round-robin games. The Swiss held their own in the opening minutes of the matchup, but Monique Lamoureux, Brianna Decker and Amanda Kessel shut the door quickly, scoring within 55 seconds of one another to put the U.S. squad up early, according to The Associated Press.

Kessel, Lamoureux and Kendall Coyne all scored twice for the U.S. squad, and Molly Schaus made 10 saves in her first start between the pipes in Sochi. With a 2-0 record, Team USA is positioned for a spot in the medal rounds regardless of how it finishes against Canada on Wednesday.

Canada plays Finland on Monday night in its last game before the marquee matchup against Team USA.
