Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli revealed in his post-deadline news conference that the defenseman is suffering from a quad strain. The team has decided to shut down McQuaid for 2 to 3 weeks and go from there. It’s certainly a setback for the Bruins given the fact that McQuaid seemed to be nearing a return until a recent setback.
“He was really close,” Chiarelli said. “You’ve heard (head coach) Claude (Julien) talk about him being ready to go, and he’s had good sessions over the break, but he just reaggravated it. We had something similar with Jared Knight last year, and you just basically have to shut him down for a couple of weeks and just rest.”
McQuaid has been out since Jan. 19 with what the team had labeled a leg injury. He was progressing well, and the thought was he’d be ready to go shortly after the Olympic break, which obviously wasn’t the case.
“His injury keeps healing, but he has setbacks,” Chiarelli said. “We’re just going to give him rest, two to three weeks, and just see where he is after that.”
Chiarelli wasn’t willing to discuss the possibility of surgery for McQuaid yet.
With McQuaid out of the mix, the Bruins added some defensive depth before Wednesday afternoon’s trade deadline, acquiring Andrej Meszaros from the Philadelphia Flyers and claiming Corey Potter off waivers from Edmonton.
