The two teams engaged in a wild line brawl just before the final siren sounded on the Blues’ 3-1 win. With about 10 seconds to play in the third period and a faceoff in the St. Louis zone, the Jets were looking for some sort of miracle finish. Once the Blues were able to clear the zone, however, things got real testy.
Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, who had six hits in the game, finished a check on two Blues players along the end boards. Before too long, Byfuglien was going after both Barret Jackman and Roman Polak. A split-second later, Brian Little jumped into the fray, and the feud was on.
The Blues actually appeared to score an empty-net goal before the final horn, but it eventually was waved off, since the fights behind the play happened before the goal was scored.
Once the players on the ice realized what was happening, everyone returned to the St. Louis zone and dropped the gloves and paired off. When all was said and done, a total of 100 penalty minutes were given out at the 19:59 mark of the third period.
