FORT MYERS, Fla. — Jonny Gomes had a pretty cool souvenir sitting outside his locker in the Boston Red Sox’s clubhouse at JetBlue Park on Friday.
Gomes, an instrumental character in Boston’s 2013 World Series run, received an impressive painting from Vernon Wells Jr., father of major league outfielder Vernon Wells.
The older Wells is a well-known sports artist who visits clubhouses around Major League Baseball to promote his work. The latest addition to his portfolio is a painting centered on Gomes and the “Boston Strong” theme that became a rallying cry throughout Boston in the wake of last April’s marathon bombings.
