Lee Nguyen scored the dramatic, game-winning goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. It was the Revolution midfielder’s first goal in of the season. Nguyen’s goal also was the first scored by a Revolution player in 2014.
After failing to score in their first three games this season, the Revs ended their goal drought in the 35th minute — albeit with San Jose’s help. Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez did the honors by scoring an own goal.
However, San Jose tied the game when American World Cup hopeful beat goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth with a composed finish in the 69th minute.
San Jose looked like it was going to extend its home unbeaten streak to 22 games, but Nguyen had other ideas. He took a pass on the left, dribbled by a defender and and hit an accurate shot past goalkeeper Jon Busch. It was the Earthquakes’ first loss at Buck Shaw Stadium since March 3, 2013.
The Revolution improved their record to 1-1-2. Their next game is on Saturday against D.C. United at RFK Stadium. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
