Before heading down to Augusta for the Masters, where the two-time major champion will continue his own tradition unlike any other — selling merchandise outside his RV in the Hooters parking lot — Daly spoke with Ewan Murray of The Guardian.
The golfer revealed that he hasn’t had an alcoholic beverage in six years but has turned to another drink to quench his thirst, which appears to be insatiable. Daly told Murray he has cut back from about 28 cans of soda a day to about 10-12 because of a lap band procedure he had.
“The band won’t allow me to drink as many,” Daly said. “If I don’t have ice, I can’t drink it. I can’t have it straight because of the carbonation. I have to drink it slowly and not out of a can, I need some ice. I used to have 26-28 cans a day. Now I have 10 to 12 at the most.”
But there is one thing that Daly consumes more than Diet Coke. The 47-year-old divulged that he smokes about 40 cigarettes a day.
“Some guys (on tour) want to do a little more cardio training; I can’t see me being allowed to smoke a cigarette on a treadmill,” he said. “I don’t think they will let me into the gym if I do that. Will they?”
Doubtful, John. Doubtful.
