George Brett, Lorde Finally Meet; He Inspired Hit Song ‘Royals’ (Photo)

Grammy Award-winning recording artist Lorde has said she’ll never be royal, but she met one Tuesday night.

The 17-year-old singer from New Zealand said last year that her hit song “Royals,” which won a Grammy for Song of the Year, was inspired by a photo she saw of Kansas City Royals great George Brett. After the revelation was made, the Royals contacted Lorde, and she and Brett unsuccessfully tried several times to meet.

But Lorde and the Royals star finally met Tuesday night before the singer performed a show in Las Vegas.

The photo of Brett appeared in the July 1976 issue of National Geographic, according to Kathy Lu of The Kansas City Star. Brett’s man-of-the-people look and uniform struck a chord with the songwriter, who said, “He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals.’ It was just that word. It’s really cool.”
