The Portuguese soccer superstar could grace the field when his national team faces Mexico in a 2014 FIFA World Cup tuneup game June 6 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Portugal head coach Paulo Bento included Ronaldo on his 30-man preliminary World Cup squad, which he announced Tuesday.
Ronald is Portugal’s captain and all-time leading goal scorer with 49 in 110 games. The 29-year-old also won the most recent FIFA Ballon d’Or award, cementing his status as the top player in the sport.
Ronaldo is battling a hamstring injury, but he’s expected to recover in time for Real Madrid’s encounter with Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final on May 24.
Ronaldo then will have nearly two weeks to prepare for the Mexico game alongside his international teammates. Portugal then will travel to Brazil, where it hopes to challenge for the world championship.
Portugal’s squad also includes Real Madrid defenders Pepe and Fabio Coentrao, Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho and Manchester United winger Nani.
The Portugal-Mexico game kicks off at 8:30 p.m. ET. Tickets for the game now are available through www.Ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 or at all Boston-area Ticketmaster locations.
