The skies were clear for Wednesday’s game between the Fort Wayne TinCaps and the Great Lakes Loons, so TinCaps first baseman Fernando Perez must have been especially surprised when water started raining down around him.
No, Perez wasn’t dreaming. As it turns out, the first baseman had somehow managed set off a sprinkler while giving chase to a foul ball down the right field line.
The sprinkler almost appears booby-trapped in the video, as a powerful stream of water erupts in a geyser a split-second after Perez steps on it. Check out the wild sequence below.

The incident halted the game for nearly 20 minutes, but a group of young fans in the right field seats didn’t seem to mind. Never ones to say no to some watery fun, several children gathered near the geyser and cheered with glee as the water spurted into the air.
While the exploding sprinkler was finally contained, the TinCaps’ opponent was not. The Great Lakes offense exploded for five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings en route to a 15-4 win.
