A’s Pitcher Drew Pomeranz Breaks Hand Punching Chair After Rough Start

Oakland Athletics pitcher Drew Pomeranz certainly knows how to make a bad situation worse.

The left-hander has been stellar all season, taking a 1.90 ERA through 17 appearances into Monday’s start against the Texas Rangers. But the Rangers knocked Pomeranz around to the tune of eight runs over 3 2/3 innings in the A’s 14-8 loss, and the southpaw was not a happy camper following his rough outing.

Pomeranz took out his anger on a wooden chair on his way to the clubhouse, fracturing his right hand in the process and landing himself on the disabled list.

“I just let my emotions take over me, and I did something stupid,” Pomeranz told reporters, via ESPN.com. “It sucks. Obviously, I didn’t mean for it to happen. It sucks because I want to play, I want to pitch. I’m trying to win games and help the team out. Obviously, I’m not helping the team out when I do something stupid like that.”

While it is good news that Pomeranz fractured his non-pitching hand, he’ll still be out of commission for a while, and the timetable for his return is unknown at this point.

“Hopefully, I’ll be back as soon as possible,” Pomeranz said. “This is the first time I’ve broken a bone, though, so I don’t know.

“I play it over and over in my head — wish I hadn’t done it. I was walking up to the clubhouse and was just mad.”

Oakland called up reliever Evan Scribner from Triple-A to fill Pomeranz’s roster spot.
