Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani opened the scoring when he converted on his penalty-kick in the 24th minute, putting it in the lower right corner of the goal.
But from there, it was all Costa Rica.
Joel Campbell tied it up with a score from the center of the penalty area in the 54th minute. Just three minutes after Campbell’s strike, Oscar Duarte headed the ball into the back of the net to give Costa Rica a 2-1 advantage.
Looking to end any chance at a Uruguay comeback, Marcos Ureña added insurance in the 84th minute when he slid the ball into the left corner of the net to seal the Costa Rica win.
The win gives Costa Rica three points and at least a share of first place in Group D. Next up for Costa Rica will be Italy on June 20, while Uruguay will face off with England on June 19.
